The new revamped Snetterton 300 track is now very technical and on the Friday Test Day I struggled to get to grips with it, however I was still quick relative to the pace being set by the front running competitors.
By the time qualifying came round I had a pretty good understanding of the tyre window for my optimum quick lap and where I could really push the car to make sure I was well up the grid of 21 cars tackling this new track.
I qualified in 7th place, heading my team on the grid; the only people to out qualify me were drivers who are previous Volkswagen Cup race winners. Most of them had also completed an extra day’s worth of testing on the new track; this boosted my confidence and I knew I could hook up behind the quicker drivers which would stand me in good stead for a decent end result.
The start of race one was very good and I got off the line well, pulling close up to the bumper of ex-truck racer Richard Walker, unfortunately on the run to turn one I got a knock on my left rear which slowed me slightly and knocked the tracking out for the whole race. Despite the damage I managed to hold 7th place until the end of the race where I crossed the line to equal the highest placed woman in a Volkswagen Cup race. This also meant I would start 7th for race two where I was now hoping to be racing in the top 6.
At the first corner of race two I was involved in an incident and suffered a puncture trying to avoid a spinning car. I nursed the car back to the pits for the team to change the wheel but I unfortunately lost three laps as they also had to do a few repairs to the car before I could go back out. The knock on effect of this meant that I had completed less than 80% of the race and so did not score any championship points. I guess that’s racing for you!
Even with a ‘0’ point score for race two I am still 10th in the championship and am hoping to move up a few more places at my next meeting at Brands Hatch and achieve my target of being the highest placed female in a Volkswagen Cup race. The television coverage of Snetterton will be on Motors TV UK on the 4th June at 7.24pm.
